Ready to Go!

Game On!

We have been experiencing early spring conditions with virtually no run off due to the lack of snow on the ground. Last week end we saw highs of 70's on Saturday which spurred an impromptu family picnic and a drift in the Shawmut section of the Kennebec. We saw plenty of early black stones, but never saw a fish come up to eat one. However, river and stream levels are still on the high side at present due to 4 inches of rain that fell early this week.

In a surprise move, the governor signed into law legislation that opened the general open water fishing season ahead of schedule this Thursday, March 25th. The traditional opening day is on April 1. The law was signed in response to early ice out conditions on most inland lakes in the lower half of the state.

Around here, it was ice-out on Cobbossee Lake on March 17, which is nearly a full 30 days ahead of normal. Although with temps in the mid-20's this weekend, it will likely put a damper on a lot of efforts.

Nonetheless, the flies are tied, the boat is clean, and new lines have been loaded on the reels. It's time to get down to business.

Here is to a great 2010 season!
